TREKKING IN NEPAL : MAKALU REGION
 

This is an outstanding trek in the eastern region of Nepal which offers a combination of rich culture heritage, unsurpassed beauty and biological diversity. The trail takes you from the steamy lowlands of Tumlingtar on the Arun River, through one of the least frequented areas of Nepal, to the base camp of Makalu [8475m]. The trail follows the beautiful Barun river valley in the Makalu Barun National Park, crossing Shipton pass at 4127 meter before arriving at Makalu Base Camp [5000m], from here views of the south face of Makalu, as well as Everest and Lhotse are truly spectacular. The Arun valley is also a home of rare species of various Birds which are now only found in Nepal.

Anyone in good shape and has previous experience of trekking can make this fairly challenging trek anytime in March to May and September to early December.

 
Makalu Base Camp Trek : 23 days

The majestic view from the Singla Top of massif Manaslu , with Manaslu (8163m.) poking up from behind the Ganesh Himal appears before you. To the northwest is the Ganesh Himal and at other side looms Langtang Himal. Ganesh (7406m.) and her sisters jut up from the valley below like large crystals thrust out of the earth, creating a stunning panorama of glaciers, peaks, rock, snow, and ice.

Day 01-02: Drive from Kathmandu to Hille (1860 m) which takes about sixteen hours.

Day 03: Trek from Hille to Mangmaya which takes about six and half hours. The trek starts with gentle ascend and moves along flat trail through the jungle of pine trees, rhododendron trees.

Day 04: Trek from Mangmaya to Surtibari which takes about six hours. The trail passes by the side of a river which is gently a flat trail with some small descends.

Day 05: Trek from Surtibari to Tumlingtar which takes about six and half hours. The trail starts with an adventurous action of hanging ropeways over the river. The trail then will ascend about 2 hours. This is a small town with an airstrip. There is a market and you find some government administrative offices and some tea houses. 

Day 06: Trek from Tumlingtar to Maney Bhanjyang which takes about five and half hours. The trail ascends all the way through forest of rhododendrons and sal trees. En route, you pass few villages. Maney Bhanjyang is a ridge inhabited by some people. It is quite surrounded by forest and this is grazing filed for local people.

Day 07: Trek from Maney Bhanjyang to Chilchile (1830m) which takes about five hours. The trail ascends through forest of rhododendrons and sal trees for about three hours and you will ultimately walk over a flat trail and you approach Chilchile. This is a small village mainly inhabited by Gurungs and other communities as well. There is a government school where locals send their children. You will find some good tea houses.

Day 08: Trek from Chilchile to Num (1500 m) which takes about four and half hours. The trail ascends for about 2 hours and then descends by a small perennial river and the walk on a flat trail for about 1 hour and reach Num. Num is a beautiful village which is enriched with many tea houses and telephone facilities.

Day 09: Trek from Num to Seduwa (1510 m) which takes about four and half hours. The trail descends steeply for about 2 and half hours till a big river named Neguwa Khola. The trail passes through the suspension bridge and the trail ascends through forest and few traditional villages. People of this area are mainly engaged in agriculture and the crops grown here are paddy, millet, potatoes and vegetables depending upon season. There is a check post and local office of Makalu Conservation Area.

Day 10: Trek from Seduwa to Tashigaon (2070 m) which takes about four hours. The trail slightly ascends but major part of the trail is flat and easy through the bushes. While walking, you can villages at far distance. Tashigaon, surrounded by verdant forest is a big sherpa village. You find prayer flags fluttering in sky in and around village. The camping spot in this village is really praiseworthy.

Day 11: Trek from Tashigaon to Khongma la (3560 m) which takes about six hours. The trail ascends throughout the day and you will walk through forest of Rhododendrons and Sal trees until you reach destination. Kongma la is a ridge and there is only one tea house here. This is also perfect place for camping. There falls snow during March and April.

Day 12: Trek from Khongma la to Mumbuk (3550 m) which takes about six and half hours. The trail ascends and then following a trail you reach a beautiful lake named “Kalo Pokhari” at the height of (4004 m). Leaving this lake, you go downhill until you reach Mumbuk. It is a camping spot surrounded by green forests.

Day 13: Trek from Mumbuk to Yangle Kharka (3600 m) which takes about four and half hours. The trail today is bit adventurous and strenuous. The trail passes for about 3 hours through a landscape which is very prone to landslides. The Barun river through the trail adds more dimensions to the trail with its spectacular views of Mt. Tutse (Peak 6) 6739 m, Peak 7 (6185 m).

Day 14: Trek from Yangle Kharka to Yak Kharka (4810 m) which takes about five and half hours. The trail ascends through the grassland and forest. You can enjoy the majestic peaks such as the Mt. Tutse (Peak 6) 6739 m, Peak 7 (6185 m), Isuwa La (5340 m) and many unnamed mountains and peaks. Yak Kharka is a grazing field and you camp overnight here.

Day 15: Trek from Yak Kharka to Makalu Base Camp (4812 m) which takes about four hours. The trail passes through a flat trail and will descend to Perennial River. As you reach Makalu Base Camp, you will be mesmerized by the views of Mt. Makalu (8463 m), Baruntse (7152 m), Kali Himal (6985 m), Chamlang (7390 m), Makalu II (7640 m), etc.

Day 16: Rest at Makalu Base Camp. You will enjoy the whole day in the base camp. You will have a spectacular views of different mountains and peaks like  Mt. Makalu (8463 m), Baruntse (7152 m), Kali Himal (6985 m), Chamlang (7390 m), Makalu II (7640 m), etc. You can also hike to Baruntse Base Camp.

Day 17: Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka (3600 m). which takes about four and a half hours. After ascending for few hours, the trail moves along flat level path and at the end it descends to reach Yangle Kharka. En route, you walk through rocky forest path with views of green hills and huge stones at some distance.

Day 18: Trek from Yangle Kharka to Dobato which takes about four and half hours. The trail ascends for almost three hours through the same landscape of landslide. Then you have to trek uphill passing through jungle all the way to Dobato. This is not a village but a camping place. Here, you find small bushes of rhododendrons.
 
Day 19: Trek from Dobato to Tashigaon (2070 m) which takes about six hours. The trail descends steeply upto Khongma la via Kali Pokhari through jungle. You again walk along downhill all the way to Tashigaon. 

Day 20: Trek from Tashigaon to Num (1490 m) which takes about five hours. The trail steeply descends in the beginning and will pass through a steep ascend later on to reach Num. You pass through small forest of bamboo and small villages.

Day 21: Trek from Num to Maney Bhanjyang (1158 m) which takes about five  hours. The trail ascends in the starting through the forest and will gently descend in the second half of the day.

Day 22: Trek from Maney Bhanjyang to Tumlingtar and it takes about five and half hours. The trail descends all the way through forest of rhododendrons and sal trees. En route, you pass few villages.

Day 23: Fly from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu.

National Park entry permit, Trekking permit, all surface transportation to and fro, a guide and required number of porter(s), cook, kitchen helper, sherpas, all meals three times a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea, coffee, fruit, juice, etc.), necessary camping equipments such as tents, kitchen tent, dining tent,  toilet tent, mattresses, down   sleeping bags, down jackets, cooking utensils, fuel etc. camping charges, rescue help, insurance and equipment for the Nepali staffs.
